Overview

Chlorine has been used to disinfect water for more than 100 years, it is the most widely used form of disinfectant and in some countries is the only disinfectant allowed to treat drinking water. Its long term residual effects mean that it is suitable for large water distribution systems. Another benefit of using chlorine gas is its low operation cost, 1kg chlorine costs about £1, meaning treatment of 1 m3 water with 0.5 ppm costs less than 0.1p

At pH 0, chlorine in water is present as pure chlorine – Cl2. With rising pH, chlorine reacts with water to form hypochloric acid – HClO and hydrochloric acid - HCl. In the range of pH 2-6, HClO is the major disinfection compound. At higher pH values, hypochloric acid is neutralized to form its corresponding salt ion, the hypochlorite ion – ClO-. At approx. pH 9, the neutralization is complete. ClO- has nearly no disinfection potential

Vaccuperm gas dosing systems work in accordance with the tried-and-tested full-vacuum principle, which regulates the addition of gaseous chlorine reliably and precisely.

The pressure of the chlorine gas is reduced to the vacuum. This method successfully avoids chlorine gas leakage. In the event of a pipe breakage, no chlorine gas can escape, only ambient air is drawn. Vacuum chlorine gas dosing systems are composed of two principal components.

Vaccum regulator

The vacuum regulator is a pressure reducing valve, which reduces the overpressure from the chlorine tank side to the negative pressure on the vacuum side. The valve opens, when a sufficient vacuum is present on the outlet side. Vacuum regualtors with pressure gauge and a liquid trap are available for more safety.

Dosing regulator

The chlorine gas volume flow is adjusted with the dosing regulator. This can be effected manually or automatically via motor control. VGB models combine a vacuum regulator and a dosing unit in a compact enclosure. They are not available with change-over device or servomotor for dosing regulator.

Dosing regulator for 9 capacity ranges up to 4000 g/h.

Vaccuperm VGA-146

Vacuum regulator for direct installation on a chlorine drum or a header line. Capacity range up to 10 kg/h.

Vaccuperm VGA-117

Dosing regulator for 6 capacity ranges up to 10 kg/h.
